Morocco and Mauritania have signed a bilateral action plan in Belém, Brazil, to enhance their cooperation on environmental matters and sustainable development over the next two years. The agreement was signed by Leïla Benali, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, and Messouda Baham Mohamed Laghdaf, Mauritania’s Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, on the sidelines of the Climate Leaders Summit ahead of COP30.
This plan, part of the cooperation agreement established in Rabat, outlines the exchange of experiences in areas such as environmental governance, combating climate change, waste management, ecological transition, blue economy, integrated coastal zone management, and environmental monitoring.
Both countries have committed to developing joint actions and mobilizing funding from regional and international institutions. Among the scheduled initiatives are study visits, training workshops, and joint participation in international forums and simulations for responding to accidental marine pollution.
This cooperation reflects Morocco and Mauritania’s determination to protect the environment, progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals, and effectively implement their Nationally Determined Contributions.
