    Energy Transition: Masen is Preparing a Strategic National Mapping of Renewable Energies

    The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen) is poised to take a new step in structuring the development of renewable energies. Starting in 2026, the Agency will launch a national geographic information system dedicated to renewable energies (GIS EnR), covering the entire Moroccan territory. This strategic tool is designed to enhance energy planning, decision-making, and spatial optimization of solar and wind projects.

    This digital system is fully aligned with the national ambition to raise the share of renewable energies to 52% of the electrical mix by 2030, equipping public stakeholders with an integrated vision of energy potentials, territorial constraints, and existing infrastructure.

    A Management Tool Based on Spatial Data

    By its very nature, the development of renewable projects is closely linked to space. The selection of sites, assessment of solar and wind potential, analysis of environmental constraints, and integration into transport networks require a nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the territory. It is precisely this function that the GIS EnR will serve.

    According to Masen, the platform will enable the acquisition, storage, integration, analysis, and visualization of georeferenced data, covering the entire project development cycle: from mapping energy potential to technical and economic analysis, environmental assessment, and stakeholder involvement.

    By centralizing this information, the system will provide a global and coherent understanding of spatial challenges, facilitating the identification of areas most suitable for the installation of renewable infrastructures while minimizing environmental and social impacts.

    Identifying, Balancing, Optimizing

    In practical terms, the GIS EnR will allow for the identification of sites offering the best compromise between energy potential, technical feasibility, economic viability, and territorial acceptability. It will also facilitate the definition of necessary infrastructures, particularly connections to electrical networks, and will contribute to better risk anticipation.

    The tool will play a key role in the communication of energy planning results, both to decision-makers and to local authorities and communities, making site selection choices clearer and better justified.

    A Collaborative Platform for Internal Performance

    Beyond prospecting, the GIS EnR is designed as an internal collaborative platform accessible to Masen teams. By streamlining access to geographical information and standardizing analyses, it aims to improve operational efficiency, decision consistency, and coordination across different phases of project development.

    The platform will also integrate the management of Masen’s project portfolio and land assets, as well as enhance the value of existing achievements. Solar and wind atlases will provide a consolidated view of installed capacities and untapped potential at the national level.

    A Key Component of Morocco’s Energy Transition

    In a context marked by the rapid rise of wind and solar energy—whose contribution to the electrical mix continues to grow—Masen is thus strengthening its capacity for anticipation and management. The deployment of the GIS EnR is part of a broader approach to the digital transformation of the Agency, aimed at more precise, effective energy planning that is better rooted in the territorial realities of the Kingdom.

    By structuring spatial data as a strategic lever, Masen affirms its role as a central player in Morocco’s energy transition, balancing climate ambition, energy sovereignty, and investment optimization.
