A flight connecting Marrakech to Paris has been operated for the first time with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), marking a major advancement for air transport between Morocco and Europe. This initiative, led by Vivo Energy Morocco in partnership with Royal Air Maroc, is part of a commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation and promote more responsible tourism.

The flight AT740, which took off from Marrakech-Menara airport at 4:20 PM with 151 passengers on board, was operated by a Boeing 737 NG. Thanks to the use of SAF, a reduction of approximately 10 tons of CO₂ was recorded, which is nearly one-third of the total emissions of the flight.

A turning point for sustainable aviation in Morocco

This advancement demonstrates the commitment of both companies to the energy transition of the aviation sector. Hamid Addou, CEO of Royal Air Maroc, emphasizes that “the use of SAF on this flight is a first between Morocco and Europe and illustrates our desire to actively contribute to more responsible aviation”.

For his part, Matthias de Larminat, General Manager of Vivo Energy Morocco, states: “This delivery of SAF represents a major step forward for the decarbonization of the aviation sector. As a key player in fuel distribution in Morocco, we are proud to support this energy transition.”

A response to new environmental requirements

As European regulations require a minimum of 2% SAF in refueling operations in Europe starting in 2025, this initiative positions Morocco as a pioneer of sustainable fuel on the African continent.

The SAF used by Vivo Energy Morocco is derived from renewable raw materials such as biomass, used oils, and municipal waste. Its use allows for a reduction of up to 80% of CO₂ emissions over the entire life cycle of the fuel, without requiring technical modifications to aircraft engines.

A sustainable commitment for Vivo Energy Morocco and Royal Air Maroc

Certified CSR by CGEM, Vivo Energy Morocco is multiplying initiatives to help its clients reduce their carbon footprint. For its part, Royal Air Maroc is focusing on sustainable solutions, including solar energy production, optimizing energy consumption, and waste recycling.

With this flight, the two companies confirm their role as pioneers in the transition to greener aviation, in line with international climate commitments.
