The World Bank has expressed its admiration for Morocco’s national strategy for the preservation and revitalization of oases. These unique ecosystems, rich in human, cultural, and natural heritage, are at the heart of Moroccan initiatives to combat the effects of climate change.
A national commitment to climate challenges
Recognizing the growing threats to oases, Morocco has implemented an ambitious strategy aimed at preserving these territories while improving the well-being of local populations. This strategy revolves around flagship projects, such as the date processing unit in Ferkla, in the Errachidia region, which supports small farmers and promotes the involvement of youth and women.
Support from international partners
The World Bank is actively supporting Morocco in this endeavor, notably by providing 200,000 climate-resistant vitro date palm plants, an initiative that is already bearing fruit. At the same time, innovative programs that valorize oasis waste and involve youth have emerged.
A key player on the international stage
Morocco, in partnership with institutions such as the National Agency for the Development of Oasis Zones and Argan Trees (ANDZOA), positions itself as a leader in international mobilization for the sustainable management of oases. In April 2025, a high-level conference will officially establish the International Commission for the Sustainable Development of Oases and launch the “Sustainable Oases Initiative.” This initiative will bring together governments, researchers, and civil organizations to develop sustainable solutions.
Through these joint efforts, Moroccan oases represent a model to follow for reconciling environmental preservation and socio-economic development.
