The energy transition in Africa was the focus of a debate meeting held on Tuesday in Casablanca, on the occasion of the 10th edition of the African Meetings on Energy Efficiency.
Held under the auspices of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), this edition took place under the theme “Made in Africa: engine of the continent’s energy transition.”
The event highlighted the role of companies in the energy sector as well as various innovative initiatives led by public and private actors in favor of a low-carbon economy.
It also aimed to promote the exchange of experiences, showcase best practices, and encourage cooperation among stakeholders engaged in building a sustainable, equitable, and sovereign energy future for Africa.
In a speech on this occasion, the Director General of the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency (AMEE), Mohamed Benyahya, emphasized that this meeting is an opportunity to inform foreign partners as well as local actors about the progress made by Morocco in the field of energy efficiency, as well as its future ambitions.
He also highlighted the regional energy efficiency and decarbonization plans developed in partnership with regional councils and expected by next September, specifying that these plans target several key sectors, such as transport, construction, industry, agriculture, and public lighting.
Mr. Benyahya stressed the importance of such events for establishing partnerships, particularly with friendly countries, in a dynamic of strengthening South-South cooperation in the field of sustainable energy.
The speakers discussed the challenges related to decarbonization in Africa, in light of new climate regulations and the need to propose innovative solutions to businesses and investors, both in terms of financing and energy governance.
The discussions also focused on examples of success, particularly in the areas of water desalination, renewable energies, and sustainable agriculture, while highlighting the essential role of green finance in accelerating the implementation of energy transition projects. The strategic issues related to sustainable investments in Morocco were also addressed.
The program of this 10th edition of the African Meetings on Energy Efficiency included seminars, workshops, and discussions on various themes, such as energy efficiency, sustainable transport, green industry, carbon financing, and public-private partnerships.
Four African centers specialized in energy efficiency and renewable energies participated, alongside regional and international experts, as well as official delegations from Ghana, Senegal, France, Italy, and the United States.
