The Ministry of State responsible for maritime fishing launched a pilot project on Monday at the port of Sidi Ifni aimed at replacing plastic pots used in octopus fishing with pots made of clay.
This is an ecological alternative that aligns with the strategic guidelines of the Kingdom of Morocco regarding the protection of the marine environment and the promotion of sustainable fishing practices, the Ministry of State stated in a press release, adding that this initiative also aligns with the sector’s commitments to sustainability and the preservation of the marine environment.
In this context, 1,000 clay pots were distributed in the first phase for the benefit of artisanal fishing professionals, pending the completion of the distribution of a total of 5,000 pots in the coming days, as part of a project led by the Ministry of State aimed at reducing marine pollution caused by plastics and strengthening sustainable fishing practices within the sector, the same source emphasized.
It was noted that this environmental initiative is among the pioneering projects at the national level. Project officials aim to assess its environmental and economic performance in preparation for the generalization of the experience to other ports and fishing areas in the future.
This approach has been praised by several local professionals, who see it as a qualitative leap towards modernizing work tools while respecting environmental balances and perfectly aligning with national guidelines aimed at promoting the blue economy and achieving sustainable and comprehensive development in the field of maritime fishing.
