Morocco had, in 2024, 4,215 hectares of olive groves managed according to organic farming standards, according to Le Monde de l’agriculture organique, a reference report published by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM). This data confirms the Kingdom’s gradual integration into global sustainable olive oil dynamics.
The document specifies that olives cultivated under organic standards now represent 7.2% of the global area dedicated to this species. Additionally, 72,760 hectares are currently undergoing conversion to organic production, reflecting a qualitative shift in agricultural practices on an international scale.
In the country rankings, Spain tops the list for organic olive groves, followed by Italy and Tunisia, then Portugal, Turkey, and Argentina. Morocco, for its part, ranks among the fifteen leading countries recorded, alongside notable mentions such as France, Palestine, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, Chile, and Azerbaijan.
The report highlights a strong European concentration of organic olive groves, with the continent containing the majority of globally certified areas, ahead of Africa. In this context, Morocco’s declared area reinforces its position in the international map of organic olive oil production.
The study also points out significant national disparities in the relative share of olive groves managed under organic agriculture. It notes that 19% of Italy’s olive-growing area is certified organic, compared to 11% in Spain. France stands out with the highest relative share, as 39% of its total olive area is classified as organic production.
Jointly established by FiBL and IFOAM, this data provides an accurate representation of the current balance of organic olive oil production worldwide. It confirms that, while not among the top producers by volume, Morocco is now visibly and structurally part of the global movement toward more sustainable agricultural practices, particularly in a strategic sector for its agriculture and exports.
