An alarming water stress
With renewable water resources per capita falling below the critical threshold of 500 m³ per year, Morocco is in a state of “extreme water stress.” Persistent drought and an uneven distribution of withdrawals exacerbate this crisis, jeopardizing agriculture, a pillar of the economy and food security.
To address this urgency, “Morocco Digital 2030” proposes to integrate digital technologies at every stage of water management. This vision encompasses both agricultural irrigation and domestic distribution, aiming to turn these challenges into opportunities through innovation.
Technologies for resilient agriculture
Moroccan agriculture, a major consumer of water, is at the heart of this transformation. The program plans to adopt smart irrigation systems, soil sensors, surveillance drones, and real-time weather data platforms. These tools allow for optimized water management, reducing waste and making crops less vulnerable to climate hazards.
Networks of sensors will also monitor dams, detect leaks, and manage water usage in real-time, particularly in rural areas. However, access to these often costly technologies remains a crucial issue. Training farmers to adopt these methods presents another significant challenge.
A collective challenge
While digital technology is a powerful lever, it cannot alone solve the water crisis. The transition to sustainable agricultural practices, such as drip irrigation or less water-intensive crops, requires significant investments and a change in mindset.
The government is committed to supporting this evolution through subsidies and awareness campaigns, while calling for a general mobilization. Sustainable water management concerns every citizen, as demand, driven by population growth and the effects of climate change, will continue to rise.
