The 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30) officially opened on Monday in Belém, Brazilian Amazon, with the ambition of giving a new momentum to global climate action.
Morocco is participating in this global gathering, which will continue until November 21, through an official delegation led by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali.
Delegations from 194 countries, as well as the European Union, are taking part in COP30, according to information released by the government of the state of Pará.
The capital of this Amazonian state expects to welcome more than 50,000 visitors, including negotiators, observers, scientists, government representatives, civil society organizations, and social movements.
All will discuss the priorities set by the Brazilian presidency: strengthening multilateralism, connecting climate policies to the daily lives of people, and accelerating the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
For the first time, COP is being held in the heart of the Amazon, an iconic territory representing the global climate emergency. The choice of Belém highlights the strategic role of the Amazon rainforest in regulating the planet’s climate and in the pursuit of sustainable solutions.
COP30 is also expected to witness the largest indigenous mobilization of all previous editions, with over 3,000 participants from indigenous peoples of the Amazon.
In total, 286 events are scheduled in the blue and green zones, spread across four auditoriums. The pavilions will host the Brazilian and international communities in dialogues on combating climate change.
Negotiations will primarily focus on revising Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as on climate financing and support mechanisms for developing countries in their energy transitions.
Each “Thematic Day” has been designed to align with the six pillars of the COP30 Action Agenda—Energy, Industry and Transport; Forests, Oceans and Biodiversity; Agriculture and Food Systems; Cities, Infrastructure and Water; Human and Social Development; and Cross-Cutting Issues—while highlighting the priority actions and solutions defined in the 30 Key Objectives for the implementation of the COP30 presidency.
Beyond the blue zone, where official negotiations will take place, numerous activities will animate the city to raise public awareness of the multiple dimensions of the climate crisis.
COP30 was preceded by a Climate Leaders Summit held on November 6 and 7, which brought together heads of state and government, ministers, and representatives from international organizations from 153 delegations, including Morocco, represented by Ms. Benali alongside the Ambassador of His Majesty the King in Brazil, Nabil Adghoghi, to discuss the urgent challenges of climate change and the necessary commitments to address them.
