Morocco takes a new step in its energy transition strategy by joining Green Hysland, an innovative international project focused on developing pilot models of green hydrogen ecosystems. This experimental program, supported by the European Commission and backed by funding of 10 million euros, is currently underway on the island of Mallorca. Its ambition is to create the first “hydrogen valley” in the Mediterranean.
A large-scale laboratory
Green Hysland is based on a simple principle: to test a complete ecosystem based on green hydrogen — from production to consumption — with an annual target of 330 tons, while ensuring traceability through a guarantee of origin system. The experience also includes assessing its technical, economic, regulatory, environmental, and social impact.
Morocco thus joins a consortium made up of 11 countries, including 9 EU member states and Chile, in a spirit of scientific and energy cooperation. The goal is clear: to adapt this model to local contexts, particularly in Morocco, and to prepare a roadmap for large-scale deployment by 2050.
A commitment to a decarbonized economy
This participation marks a strong commitment from the Kingdom to accelerate its decarbonization and to position green hydrogen among the pillars of its energy future. The replicability of the project on Moroccan soil would offer new perspectives for various economic sectors: industry, transport, energy, etc.
Through this partnership, Morocco will benefit from valuable feedback, in addition to technical and regulatory support in line with its own ambitions regarding green hydrogen. The initiative also includes local public consultations to co-construct a long-term vision around hydrogen in the Balearics — an approach that Morocco could transpose into its own strategy.
An active national representation
It is the Moroccan Association for Hydrogen and Sustainable Development that ensures Morocco’s participation in Green Hysland. Its role is to link the results obtained in Mallorca with their adaptation to Moroccan realities, with a view to structured and sustainable deployment.
With Green Hysland, Morocco is part of a global dynamic, affirming its role as a committed player in the energy transition and laying the foundations for a cleaner, more resilient future that is less dependent on fossil fuels.
