As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy and aligned with Morocco’s National Sustainable Development Strategy for 2030, GPC – Paper and Cardboard reaffirms its commitment to environmental preservation and energy efficiency through the implementation of a comprehensive Carbon Assessment at its production sites.
In accordance with the environmental charter that Ynna Holding was among the first to sign in 2009, this initiative continues GPC – Paper and Cardboard’s efforts for environmentally respectful development.
This recent initiative, aimed at assessing greenhouse gas emissions related to its activities, covers the three scopes defined by the GHG protocol: Scope 1 (direct emissions from the company), Scope 2 (indirect emissions related to energy consumption), and Scope 3 (other indirect emissions). The analysis was conducted in accordance with the Carbon Assessment Method of the Mohamed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, as well as the ISO 14064 standard, ensuring a rigorous and standardized approach.
“We are firmly committed to pursuing our growth in a spirit of social and environmental responsibility. We believe that sustainability is at the heart of our future prosperity and we are determined to integrate the principles of sustainable development into all our operations, investing for a better world for future generations.” States Mr. Mounir EL BARI, General Director of GPC – Paper and Cardboard
Carbon Assessment Results: A Clear Vision for Targeted Actions
The results obtained provide a detailed view of the distribution of emissions by scope.
For the box-making sector, Scope 3 emissions dominate at 86%, compared to 7% for Scope 1 and 6% for Scope 2. In contrast, the paper mill, being a more energy-intensive site, shows emissions of 24% and 25% for Scopes 1 and 2 respectively, while Scope 3 accounts for 51% of emissions.
This data allows GPC – Paper and Cardboard to develop a strategic action plan to reduce its environmental impact in a targeted and effective manner.
A Sustainable Commitment and a Supported Innovation Policy
True to its mission, GPC – Paper and Cardboard continues to develop innovative packaging solutions, focusing on reducing the environmental impacts of its activities. Supported by a dynamic Research & Development department, the company, a leader in the agriculture, agri-food, automotive, and industrial sectors in general, is committed to minimizing its ecological footprint through several initiatives.
- Renewable Energies and Carbon Sequestration – Integration of clean and renewable energies to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and capture atmospheric CO2.
- Energy Efficiency – Implementation of a program to reduce electricity consumption through energy efficiency audits (GPC has been ISO 50001 certified since 2016) and investments in low-energy consumption state-of-the-art machines,
- Preservation and Efficient Management of Water Resources – Optimization of water consumption and implementation of wastewater treatment and reuse techniques to limit the impact on natural resources.
