The government council approved on Thursday the draft decree No. 2.25.432 amending and supplementing decree No. 2.14.782 of 30 Rajab 1436 H (May 19, 2015) regarding the organization and operational procedures of the environmental police. This was presented by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali.

The draft decree aims to amend and supplement decree No. 2.14.782 concerning the organization and operational procedures of the environmental police in order to enhance the effectiveness of their interventions. This police force was established by Article 35 of framework law No. 99.12, which serves as a national charter for the environment and sustainable development, as stated by the Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with Parliament, government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas, during a press briefing following the council meeting.

Additionally, it includes modifications aimed at expanding the missions of the environmental police to include, beyond the areas of intervention outlined in Article 1 of the aforementioned decree No. 2.14.782, tasks related to monitoring, inspection, research, investigation, and reporting of violations as specified by law No. 81.12 concerning the Coastline and the drafting of related reports, he added.

The text also provides for updating the conditions for appointment within the environmental police, envisaging the development of a national plan stemming from regional environmental monitoring plans. Furthermore, it will allow environmental police inspectors to benefit from a standardized uniform for the performance of their duties, the design and specifications of which will be determined by decision of the government authority responsible for the environment.
