Morocco has established a new benchmark to accelerate the development of renewable energies. The National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE) has validated the capacity of the national electricity system for the period 2026-2030, now set at 10,429 MW. This decision aims to provide greater visibility to the market while strengthening the network’s capabilities in light of the growing number of green energy projects.
This projection was approved during a meeting of the ANRE Board held on January 28, 2026, in Rabat, at a time when the Kingdom seeks to increase the pace of its energy transition and better plan investments related to the transport and distribution of electricity.
### A Rise Compared to Previous Programs
The new capacity announced represents a significant increase compared to earlier cycles. It adds:
– 1,091 MW compared to the 2025-2029 program,
– and 3,193 MW compared to the 2024-2028 program.
In percentage terms, this corresponds to estimated increases of approximately 12% and 44%, indicating a gradual progression in the network’s ability to integrate more renewable generation.
### Objective: Provide Clarity to Investors and Secure the Network
For the regulator, the challenge is twofold: support the growth of the national electricity market and offer project developers a clearer understanding of medium-term connection possibilities.
The accommodation capacity is indeed a key indicator for operators, as it allows for anticipating the technical feasibility of projects while also better calibrating the necessary investments to ensure the continuity and performance of the electricity system.
### A Method Based on Consultation with Network Managers
The ANRE indicates that this work is based on a structured approach, carried out in collaboration with the various relevant network managers. The goal is to support the projection based on an assessment of the actual capacities of the transport and distribution network to ensure the reliability of the published figures.
Beyond signaling to the market, the Authority emphasizes a logic of transparency: the publication of this accommodation capacity falls within the regulatory framework of the sector and should facilitate decision-making for both public and private actors.
### A Dedicated Platform for Sector Stakeholders
In this vein, the ANRE also announces the establishment of a platform accessible to stakeholders, particularly project developers in renewable energies, to centralize information and enhance market predictability.
The initiative has received international financial support, with contributions from the African Development Bank and German cooperation, reflecting partners’ interest in Morocco’s energy trajectory.
With this new accommodation capacity set at 10,429 MW, the regulator aims to consolidate a clearer framework for investment while preparing the network to absorb an accelerated increase in renewable energies by 2030.
