Electric vehicle sales showed a 25% increase worldwide in 2024, according to figures released on Tuesday by the consulting firm Rho Motion.

In total, 17.1 million battery-powered cars, excluding plug-in hybrids, were sold over the year, setting a new record, according to registration figures compiled by this British firm.

The undisputed leader in this market, China continues to dominate with 11 million units sold, representing a 40% increase in one year.

In contrast, in Europe (including the UK, Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland), sales of electric models declined for the first time in four years, with 3 million units sold (-3%).

Sales of electric models were particularly affected by the removal of purchase subsidies in Germany, while they increased in the UK (+21.4%), which has become the leading electric market in the region, notably due to the implementation of sales targets for manufacturers.

The market also saw significant growth in the United States and Canada with 1.8 million cars sold (+9%).
