Morocco reaffirms its international climate commitment by ranking 6th in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2026, a performance announced at COP30 and celebrated worldwide.
The report, published by the NewClimate Institute, Germanwatch, and the Climate Action Network (CAN), highlights that the Kingdom receives high to very high ratings in several key areas: reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, and climate policy. Additionally, CO₂ emissions per capita remain very low.
This progress is attributed to several structural measures, including the revision of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) aligned with the Paris Agreement, and a phased-out coal plan by 2040, demonstrating an ambitious energy transition.
The report also emphasizes Morocco’s investments in public transport, particularly railways, promoting more sustainable mobility. The national strategic adaptation plan enhances the country’s resilience to climate impacts by imposing strict environmental criteria for new constructions.
Despite these advancements, certain limitations persist, particularly in the development of renewable energy. Experts recommend accelerating the deployment of solar and wind capacities and enhancing citizen participation in clean energy production.
With this ranking, Morocco positions itself among the top countries globally in climate action and maintains its status as an African leader in this field, thereby consolidating its reputation on the international stage.
