The port of Tanger Med is taking a new step towards sustainability by launching a study for the establishment of a digital platform dedicated to monitoring carbon emissions. The goal is to measure, analyze, and reduce the environmental footprint of port activities, in compliance with international standards.

A strategic project for a greener port

The Tanger Med Port Authority (TMPA) recently published a call for tenders aimed at developing a digital infrastructure capable of monitoring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and promoting the adoption of clean technologies. This initiative is part of a broader environmental strategy focused on:

    • Reducing CO₂, NOx, and SOx emissions.
    • Optimizing energy consumption.
    • Encouraging eco-responsible practices among supply chain stakeholders.

An index to evaluate the environmental performance of ships

At the heart of the project, Tanger Med plans to create an Atmospheric Emissions Index for Ships (AEIS). This tool will assess the environmental impact of ships based on their pollutant emissions. The aim is to reward less polluting ships by granting them operational or financial advantages, a model inspired by best international practices.

A digital platform for real-time monitoring

The study also aims to design a digital platform integrating a measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) system. This platform will allow:

    • Collection and analysis of data on carbon emissions from maritime and land activities at the port.
    • Effective real-time monitoring to identify emission sources and propose mitigation solutions.
    • Establishment of an incentive program to encourage the adoption of responsible maritime practices.

With this project, Tanger Med strengthens its positioning as a sustainable and eco-responsible port, while aligning with global goals for decarbonizing maritime transport.
