In a beautiful symbolic initiative, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation invited the Moroccan Association of Treasures 21 to attend the friendly match between the Moroccan national team and that of Benin, scheduled for June 9, 2025, in Fès. This invitation goes far beyond a simple sporting gesture: it illustrates a strong desire for inclusion and recognition of diversity within Moroccan society.
Sport, often considered a universal language, here transforms into a true bridge between differences. For individuals with Down syndrome, also called “Treasures 21” by the association, their presence at a major national event represents a sign of acceptance and belonging, as well as a powerful message addressed to society as a whole.
Down syndrome, characterized by the presence of an extra chromosome 21, leads to a great variability in the development of intellectual, motor, and communication skills. Yet, as the Moroccan Association of Treasures 21 (AMT 21) reminds us, these individuals can excel in many fields, whether in journalism, art, sports, or politics.
Inspiring examples are already visible around the world: Paul Mamere, a Moroccan journalist with Down syndrome, Rahma Khaled in Egypt, Mar Galceran in Spain, and Mayane Sara in France demonstrate that success is possible when appropriate support and care are present.
AMT 21, created by committed mothers, advocates for better inclusion of these individuals in all aspects of life, including education, social, and professional spheres. The association promotes a valuing language, favoring terms such as “individuals with specific skills” or “Treasures 21,” in order to combat stigmatization.
This invitation to the Morocco-Benin match thus marks a concrete step towards a more open society, where everyone, regardless of their differences, can find their place. The hope is that this example encourages other initiatives in favor of inclusion, involving both public authorities and civil society.
For AMT 21, it is urgent that all stakeholders unite their efforts to provide individuals with Down syndrome the necessary means for their development, particularly through access to healthcare, education, and employment. Because, in the end, the true victory is that of respect, love, and a fair perspective on human diversity.
