The dam policy, led under the enlightened guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, is a fundamental lever in strengthening Morocco’s water resilience, affirmed the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, on Thursday in Casablanca.

This strategic lever revolves around four principles: foresight, anticipation, solidarity, and territorial justice, in order to ensure an equitable distribution of water resources across the entire national territory, the minister indicated during a conference-debate organized by Médias24, under the theme “Water challenges: where is Morocco in 2025?”.

Referring to the Royal High Guidelines in this matter, Mr. Baraka recalled the desire to guarantee drinking water to all citizens, to cover at least 80% of irrigation needs, as well as to continue and accelerate the construction of planned dams, prioritizing regions with high rainfall.

He also mentioned, in accordance with the Royal Vision, the necessity to accelerate the realization of water transfers between the Laou, Loukkos, Sebou, Bouregreg, and Oum Er Rbia basins, to mobilize 1.7 billion m³ of water from desalination by 2030, and to adopt an ambitious program for the treatment and reuse of water.

It is also about preserving groundwater, launching projects in the field of water economy, and establishing regular communication with citizens.

In this context, the minister recalled the partnership agreement signed on May 19 between Morocco and the United Arab Emirates in the sectors of water and clean energy.

He mentioned, in this regard, the memorandums of understanding concluded by the consortium formed by the Mohammed VI Fund for Investment, Taqa Morocco, and Nareva, with the Executive and the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), for the development of new infrastructures related to water transport, desalination through renewable energies, and the development of significant electrical capacities.

The minister also shed light on the general context of water resources, the impact of climate change, major shifts in water policy, the solutions considered, and the development of resources within the framework of dynamic and long-term planning.

This conference-debate was marked by the presence of the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, and the President of the Casablanca-Settat Regional Council, Abdellatif Maâzouz.
