The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has commissioned the extension of the Loukkos treatment plant, thus strengthening and securing the drinking water supply for the cities of Larache, Ouazzane, Ksar El Kébir, as well as neighboring municipalities. This extension will also serve the city of Souk El Arbaa and nearby rural localities starting in September 2025.
With a total cost of 360 million dirhams, financed by ONEE through a loan from the Saudi Fund for Development (FSD), the extension project includes three components. The first, costing 74 million dirhams, involves enhancing production capacity through the extension of the Loukkos treatment plant for an additional flow of 330 l/s, bringing the total production capacity of the plant to 990 l/s, the construction and equipping of a treated water pumping station for a flow of 240 l/s, and the construction of a 22 kV high-voltage electrical line over a length of 14 km, the Office stated in a press release.
The second component, costing 129 million dirhams, concerns transportation and includes the installation of a DN 600 supply pipeline over a length of 65 km, the construction of two semi-buried reservoirs of 2,000 m3 each, and the implementation of a remote management system for drinking water facilities, the same source added, noting that its commissioning is scheduled for September 2025.
As for the third component, costing 152 million dirhams, it pertains to distribution and consists of laying 159 km of pipes with diameters ranging from 75 to 500 mm, the construction of three semi-buried reservoirs with respective capacities of 800 m3, 500 m3, and 350 m3, the hydromechanical and electrical equipment of two recovery stations, and the construction of a medium-voltage electrical line. Its commissioning is planned for December 2025, it continues.
This project, which is part of the National Program for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation (PNAEPI) 2020-2027, whose agreement was signed on January 13, 2020, before His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist and glorify him, will secure the drinking water supply for the aforementioned cities and neighboring municipalities and will also contribute to improving the living conditions of the beneficiary populations and supporting the socio-economic development of this region, concludes the press release.
