As part of its strategy to further integrate renewable energies and stabilize the national electrical grid, the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) has launched a call for expressions of interest for the establishment of a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a total capacity of 1,600 MWh-AC. This project plans to install these systems at several strategic sites across Morocco, including the Kénitra thermal power plant, the Settat substation, and the Al Massira hydraulic site.

Objectives and challenges of the project

This extensive program aims to address the challenges posed by the intermittency of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, by storing surplus electricity produced for use during peak consumption periods. Thus, ONEE intends to improve the resilience and reliability of the national electrical grid while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

    A strategic distribution of installations

The sites selected for the installation of BESS systems cover different regions of the country, reflecting a balanced and inclusive approach. Among them are the Kénitra thermal power plant (270 MWh), the Settat substation (150 MWh), the Al Massira hydraulic site (180 MWh), as well as the substations of Tit Mellil, Laâwamer, Tétouan, Khénifra, Khouribga, and Tensift I and II, with capacities ranging from 100 to 300 MWh.

    A commitment to energy transition

This project is part of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to promote renewable energies and achieve the set goals for sustainable development. By integrating large-scale energy storage solutions, ONEE contributes to the modernization of the national energy sector and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

    Perspectives and upcoming steps

The call for expressions of interest launched by ONEE marks the beginning of a process that will see the selection of technological and industrial partners capable of realizing this ambitious project. The next steps will include conducting in-depth technical studies, mobilizing the necessary funding, and progressively implementing the installations, with the goal of a staggered commissioning over the coming years.

In summary, ONEE’s initiative regarding battery energy storage represents a significant advancement for the Moroccan energy sector, demonstrating the Kingdom’s willingness to adapt to technological developments and environmental imperatives.
