    The desalination plant in Sidi Ifni, a structuring project capable of meeting the needs of the population.

    Commissioned last April, the seawater desalination plant in Sidi Ifni is a structuring project aimed at ensuring the supply of drinking water to the city and surrounding areas.

    This ambitious project, which is part of the National Program for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation 2020-2027 (PNAEPI), whose agreement was signed in the presence of His Majesty King Mohammed VI in January 2020, provides an innovative solution to meet the challenges of water supply in the context of climate change and successive years of drought.

    This new station addresses water scarcity and recurrent supply cuts of this vital resource in the region, contributing to the improvement of living conditions for the beneficiary populations, as well as to the economic and social development of the province.

    This strategic infrastructure, which supplies the province of Sidi Ifni and certain centers in the province of Tiznit, is based on five marine wells with a total flow rate of 230 liters per second, using reverse osmosis technology, incorporating the latest advancements in this field.

    Covering an area of 2,000 hectares, the station, with a total cost of approximately 300 million dirhams including the connecting pipelines, has a production capacity of 100 liters per second, or 8,640 m³ per day.

    It includes a raw water reservoir with a capacity of 1,500 m³, a treated water reservoir of 1,000 m³, as well as sand filters to eliminate particles and a laboratory for water quality control and treatment.

    The realization of this major project, which is part of the implementation of the Royal High Guidelines, has been highly praised by the local population, who see it as a sustainable solution to the frequent interruptions in the supply of drinking water.

    In statements to MAP, several citizens praised the positive impact of this station, stating that it will significantly contribute to improving living conditions by reducing drinking water cuts that affect many localities in the province.

    They also emphasized the strategic importance of the station in light of the growing demand for water, noting that this project will allow for diversification of water supply, which will promote local stability, domestic tourism, and investment attractiveness.

    The Sidi Ifni desalination plant remains a structuring and anticipatory project, which is part of the ongoing efforts of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water – Water Branch to meet the drinking water needs of the Guelmim-Oued Noun region and support its rapid development.
