The Senegalese government wants to save energy… and money. The goal: to reduce the public electricity bill by 40%, which amounted to 71.6 billion FCFA in 2023.
To achieve this, an ambitious program was launched on Tuesday, under the auspices of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. The AEME (Agency for the Economy and Energy Management) has officially installed a first wave of energy managers, tasked with tracking waste in the most energy-intensive administrations.
Among the action levers: replacing energy-hungry equipment, equipping public buildings with solar panels, and improving lighting. Ultimately, the AEME aims for savings of 32 billion FCFA per year.
And this is just the beginning. By 2026, the country plans to train 1,000 new managers to further strengthen this energy efficiency dynamic.
