OCP Green Water has taken a decisive step in the production and sustainable management of unconventional water resources with the commissioning, since October 2024, of an annual capacity of 60 million cubic meters (Mm³) of desalinated water intended for the drinking water supply of Southern Casablanca.

This ambitious and highly challenging project was completed in record time in collaboration with OCP Manufacturing, JESA, industrial players from the national and international ecosystem, as well as the relevant authorities, according to a statement from OCP Green Water.

It illustrates the commitment of the OCP Group to sustainable solutions to address the issue of water stress in the Oum Rabii basin, the statement specifies.

**A cutting-edge infrastructure to meet drinking water needs**

After ensuring the supply of desalinated drinking water to the cities of Safi and El Jadida for over a year, OCP Green Water is extending its commitment to securing water resources by contributing, since October 19, 2024, to the desalinated water supply of Southern Casablanca.

This step is the result of a new desalination unit dedicated to Casablanca, built on the OCP site in Jorf Lasfar, with an initial capacity of 20 Mm³/year in October 2024.

Thanks to agile and integrated project management and accelerated implementation in “fast track” mode, this capacity has been gradually increased to 60 Mm³/year by the end of December 2024.

This ramp-up now allows for covering more than a quarter of the drinking water needs of the city, thus ensuring strengthened and sustainable access to this essential resource.

The project is based on cutting-edge technologies including a desalination station from OCP Green Water, located on the OCP site in Jorf Lasfar, a pumping station, and a 54.5 km pipeline, built by public authorities, which connects the facility to the Daourate dam station.

The latter plays a key role in ensuring the drinking water supply of Southern Casablanca, thus meeting the growing needs of the population.

In a drive to optimize resources and reduce environmental impact, the project integrates an innovative system for recycling seawater used for desalination.

This process relies on industrial synergy with the production unit at the OCP site in Jorf Lasfar, allowing for the reuse of this water and thus optimizing the use of water resources. This initiative fully aligns with the vision of OCP Green Water, which places innovation and sustainability at the heart of its strategy.

    **Concrete impacts benefiting communities**

This initiative to supply 60 Mm³/year of desalinated water to provide drinking water to Southern Casablanca is not limited to a simple technical achievement.

It embodies an integrated approach with the strengthening of drinking water supply, the reduction of pressure on natural resources, and enhanced resilience to climate change.

OCP Green Water positions itself as a national leader in the production of water from unconventional sources, by desalting seawater and treating wastewater, while exclusively using clean energy.

OCP Green Water meets the industrial water needs of OCP sites, the drinking water supply of major cities such as Safi, El Jadida, and now Casablanca, as well as supporting the agricultural sector by ensuring additional water resources for irrigation, in partnership with UM6P and InnovX.

Other cities, including Khouribga, Youssoufia, Benguerir, and Marrakech, will also benefit from these infrastructures between 2025 and 2026.

By the end of 2024, the installed capacity of OCP Green Water’s desalination at Jorf Lasfar and Safi will reach 185 Mm³. In 2025, this capacity will be increased to 280 Mm³ and will reach a total of 560 Mm³ by 2027, in addition to a wastewater treatment capacity of approximately 50 Mm³.

In close collaboration with the OCP Group, the government, industrial players, and the relevant authorities, OCP Green Water is committed to ensuring sustainable access to water while combining innovation, environmental respect, and support for regional development.
