As part of its energy independence strategy, Morocco has announced an investment of over 815 million euros aimed at expanding its gas network, particularly through the modernization of the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline (GME). This initiative aims to strengthen national energy infrastructure and improve connectivity with the European market.
The Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, presented the details of this project during a parliamentary session, responding to a question about the development of the natural gas sector. She emphasized the exemplary coordination among more than 23 government institutions committed to ensuring the country’s energy sovereignty.
This program includes the renovation of strategic infrastructures connecting the Nador West Med terminal to the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline. Additionally, it encompasses the extension of over 120 kilometers of the gas network to connect key industrial areas in Mohammedia and Kénitra. These works, which are part of a sustainable strengthening approach of the national energy system, are expected to see a first phase of completion before July 23.
This operation takes place in a context where Morocco is actively pursuing its energy transition, seeking to diversify its energy sources and increase supply security. It complements other initiatives aimed at developing liquefied natural gas (LNG) and boosting infrastructure to meet the growing demand from the industrial and domestic sectors.
With this project, the Kingdom reaffirms its ambition to play a central role in the Euro-African region in terms of energy while supporting job creation and local economic growth.
