Morocco, under the impetus of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, is a pioneer in the field of renewable energies, said Bertrand Piccard, president of “Climate Impulse,” which aims to make a non-stop round-the-world flight in a hydrogen airplane, on Monday in Toulouse.

“The Kingdom, under the leadership of the Sovereign, has set an ambitious goal of reaching 52% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030,” Mr. Piccard emphasized in a statement to MAP, on the sidelines of the 3rd edition of the Airbus Summit (March 24-25), highlighting Morocco’s notable progress in developing solar and wind projects.

Morocco, he continued, has set a new goal for its energy ecosystem, with green hydrogen, noting that OCP is well positioned in the sector.

“The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and the OCP Group, a global leader in phosphate fertilizers and a major investor in the development of green hydrogen, have joined the main partners of the ‘Climate Impulse’ project, which is expected to culminate in 2028 with a non-stop and emission-free round-the-world flight aboard a green hydrogen airplane,” Mr. Piccard recalled, describing this collaboration as “extraordinary.”

According to him, UM6P will be the gateway to Africa for education, technology, and new perspectives for future generations.

“I arrived in Rabat with my solar airplane in June 2012, and I really look forward to returning with Climate Impulse to Morocco,” Mr. Piccard said.

The development of the airplane began in 2022, including research, feasibility studies, and design with the support of major industry names.

Since 2024 and the arrival of Syensqo as the first main partner, the development and construction of the airplane continue within the company 49SUD, which is led by Raphaël Dinelli, engineer and co-pilot of Climate Impulse alongside Mr. Piccard.

The contribution of UM6P and the OCP group to this project, alongside Syensqo, reflects their commitment to decarbonization and their determination to play an active role in advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 13 related to combating climate change, as well as their willingness to support global initiatives for a sustainable future.

This collaboration aims to highlight Morocco’s potential as an emerging leader in the field of green hydrogen and to demonstrate its major role in developing sustainable and innovative solutions on an international scale.
