Mitsubishi Power, a subsidiary of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) group, will supply two M701JAC gas turbines for the Al Wahda power plant, located in the province of Ouazzane. This project, carried out in partnership with the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), aims to strengthen the stability of the Moroccan electrical grid in complement to renewable energies.

The agreement was signed in Rabat in the presence of Tarik Hamane, General Director of ONEE, Javier Cavada, President of Mitsubishi Power for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, as well as representatives from China Energy Engineering Corporation Limited (CEEC), a partner in the project.

Located near the Al Wahda dam, this power plant will operate in an open cycle, providing optimal responsiveness to fluctuations in electricity production. With a capacity of 990 megawatts, it will cover about 7% of the country’s energy needs. Its commissioning is scheduled for 2027.

The installed turbines, compatible with a mixture of hydrogen and natural gas, are part of Morocco’s strategy to achieve over 52% renewable energy by 2030. Their flexibility will ensure a stable supply to the grid, despite the rise of intermittent sources.

Mitsubishi Power will also provide maintenance for the equipment under a service contract signed with ONEE. “This project strengthens our energy security while facilitating the integration of renewable energies,” said Tarik Hamane. For his part, Javier Cavada emphasized the importance of this infrastructure for the stability of the Moroccan electrical grid.
