On the occasion of World Energy Day, celebrated on October 22, Marrakech hosted a major event highlighting energy efficiency as an essential lever for a low-carbon economy and enhanced regional competitiveness. This meeting, which brought together experts, decision-makers, businesses, and investors to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to the energy transition, was jointly organized by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, as part of the “Marrakech, Sustainable City” project, and the Regional Investment Center of Marrakech-Safi, in partnership with UNDP and the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency. The event provided a conducive framework for discussions on how energy efficiency can contribute to reducing the carbon footprint, attracting investments, and strengthening the competitiveness of the Moroccan industry.
Mr. Mohamed Amine SABIBI, Acting General Director of the Regional Investment Center Marrakech-Safi, stated that “the path to a sustainable energy future requires close collaboration between the public and private sectors, between local and international stakeholders, as well as between citizens and businesses. We all must play a role in building this new green economy. The private sector has an increased responsibility to integrate cleaner and more sustainable production models. On our side, the public sector is working to create a framework and a business environment conducive to the development of the sector.”
This event, which gathered nearly 60 participants from the public, private, academic, and associative sectors, addressed several themes, including national strategies and their regional adaptations dedicated to green energy, the investment niches offered by the sector, as well as the financing mechanisms available to support businesses and institutions in their energy efficiency efforts. Ms. Noella RICHARD emphasized the importance of this initiative: “The theme of this workshop, on the occasion of World Energy Day, is highly relevant. It highlights the importance of energy efficiency as the primary lever for decarbonizing the economy, thus contributing to the positive transformation of local practices and enhancing competitiveness at the regional level. I congratulate our global, national, and local partners, as well as our Impact Program ‘Marrakech Sustainable City,’ and thank them for these high-quality advocacy, exchange, and inclusion spaces to work together towards integrated, human, and sustainable development.”
The event also highlighted two concrete projects: “MARRAKECH HADIRAT AL ANWAR,” a successful example of converting the energy supply of the Municipality of Marrakech, and the investments of the private operator “GPM HOLDING – ALMADEN MOROCCO,” a model company in the sector at the national level.
This event primarily aimed to raise awareness and mobilize all local stakeholders on the importance of energy efficiency for the future of the region. By reducing costs, improving productivity, and accessing new green financing opportunities, Marrakech intends to play a decisive role in the Kingdom’s energy transition and contribute to achieving national sustainability and economic growth objectives.
