The Finnish group Wärtsilä has signed a five-year contract with Boto SA, a subsidiary of Moroccan company Managem, to ensure the operation and maintenance of a 23 MW power plant intended for the gold project in Boto, in eastern Senegal.
Located 88 km from Kédougou, near the borders with Mali and Guinea, this off-grid facility will supply power to a gold mine using six Wärtsilä 32 engines of 2.7 MW and four 1.5 MW diesel generators. The agreement includes digital tools for remote assistance and anomaly detection powered by artificial intelligence.
For Driss Mounji, Director of International Operations at Managem, this partnership represents “a decisive step” to enhance the reliability and efficiency of gold production while preparing for the future integration of renewable solutions.
On his part, Marc Thiriet, Africa Director of Wärtsilä Energy, emphasizes that this first power plant owned by Managem illustrates the joint commitment to provide competitive energy to the African mining sector, in line with the objectives of the Emerging Senegal Plan (PSE). The technical flexibility of the system will later allow for the integration of solar energy.
Beyond the mine, the project is also expected to stimulate the local economy by creating jobs in the Kédougou region while supporting Senegal’s ambitions in industrialization and energy independence.
