Speaking at the Green Impact Expo & Summit (GIES 2025), the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, highlighted Morocco’s efforts in sustainable mobility. She reminded that, despite a high consumption of fossil fuels, the country aims to become a leader in energy transition through innovative solutions in transportation.
Concrete measures to reduce the carbon footprint of transport
With over 36% of national energy consumption and 23% of greenhouse gas emissions, the transport sector is a key issue. To address this, the Moroccan government has launched several initiatives, including the installation of 150 charging stations for electric vehicles over more than 1,200 kilometers.
The country has also implemented tax incentives, including exemption from the annual tax on electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as the adoption of the Euro 6 standard since January 2022. In the aviation sector, Morocco is committed to using sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) to reduce CO2 emissions.
An integrated strategy for a successful energy transition
The minister also mentioned regional plans for developing energy efficiency, developed in partnership with the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency (AMEE). These programs aim to optimize energy consumption across all sectors, including transport, to accelerate the country’s ecological transition.
Thus, Morocco confirms its ambition to become a key player in sustainable mobility and the decarbonization of transport, while promoting active cooperation between the public and private sectors.
