Despite a campaign marked by drought and strong competition in global markets, Morocco is achieving a historic performance. For the first time, the Kingdom has exported more than 100,000 tons of avocados, confirming its rise among the major players in the global market.
According to a joint analysis by EastFruit and FreshPlaza, the volume of Moroccan exports for the past season is estimated between 100,000 and 110,000 tons. This feat was made possible thanks to product quality praised by importers, despite climatic uncertainties.
A global market under pressure
This progress occurs in a tense global context, dominated by an oversupply—particularly from Peru—which is weighing on prices. Europe, Morocco’s main outlet, is seeing its markets saturated. In Italy, Peruvian Hass avocados are causing a sharp drop in prices. In Spain, demand remains strong, especially from France, the Netherlands, and Germany, but high volumes complicate market balances. In France, Hass avocados continue to attract interest, but the abundance is leading some operators to consider an early end to the season.
Amid abundance, Morocco finds its niche
In this turmoil, Morocco stands out for the consistency of its supply and regular quality in an increasingly unpredictable market. “In a context dominated by irregularity and haste, Moroccan reliability becomes a preferred criterion,” emphasizes a Dutch broker.
Fierce competition on other continents
On the American continent, Mexico remains a giant, with 90% of its avocados destined for the United States. The upcoming campaign is expected to see its volumes increase by 150 million kilos. Peru, California, and Colombia are also supplying this already well-stocked market, exerting constant pressure on prices.
Further south, Chile is playing on two fronts: 135 million kilos for export and 100 million reserved for the domestic market. South Africa aims for 22.5 million cartons exported, despite a delayed harvest start due to rains. In Asia, China is experiencing upward price pressure due to a decrease in Peruvian supply and delivery delays.
A performance that calls for more
In this global landscape marked by saturation and imbalances, the Moroccan performance has not gone unnoticed. It demonstrates the country’s ability to position itself as a reliable supplier, even in times of crisis. It remains to be seen whether this momentum can be maintained or even amplified in the future.
