Morocco is actively contributing to the development of green hydrogen through a series of pilot projects for the production of this clean energy, presented at the “KEY-The Energy Transition Expo 2025,” initiated by the Italian Exhibition Group (IEG), from March 5 to 7 in Rimini, Italy.
The Kingdom, which has enormous solar and wind resources, aims to establish itself as a strategic hub for green hydrogen in Africa to meet the expected demand in the European market, while making this clean energy resource a technological solution for decarbonizing the national industry.
Participating in this key exhibition for energy transition and efficiency, which concluded on Friday with “record results,” Mouhcine Benmeziane from the Institute for Research in Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN) led a roundtable on the theme: “Accelerating Sustainable Electrification: Key to Economic and Social Development in Africa,” organized at the initiative of the RES4Africa Foundation.
During this meeting, marked by the participation of African and European officials and experts, Mr. Benmeziane stated that IRESEN is working on pilot projects for the production of green hydrogen aimed at transforming hydrogen into clean fuels for industry and transport.
The Moroccan institute tirelessly strives to establish strategic partnerships with Europe and African countries, with the goal of developing a competitive hydrogen sector, he emphasized.
These initiatives will enable the establishment of a new energy industry and the creation of jobs, while reducing dependence on fossil fuels and offering Africa the opportunity to become a major exporter of green hydrogen, the Moroccan expert explained, adding that the goal is to invest in long-term storage solutions.
A cornerstone of the energy transition in Africa, energy storage constitutes a driver of social and economic transformation, he said. Hence the role of the “Green Energy Park,” the unique research center in Africa that Morocco has established to serve scientists, industrialists, students, and professionals to experiment with new batteries and storage solutions, test and optimize concrete applications, and train in renewable energy and storage technologies.
On this point, the African speakers at this roundtable, which is part of the many events, conferences, and workshops organized as part of the “KEY-The Energy Transition Expo,” unanimously emphasized the importance of hydrogen storage, a major challenge for the development of the sector, calling for collaboration between researchers, businesses, and public decision-makers in this field.
Africa, which is at a decisive turning point in its energy development and has significant solar resources, needs to first address the challenges related to the storage and transport of green hydrogen, they noted.
The issue of technological development and digitalization was strongly emphasized by their European peers.
More than 1,000 exhibitors and international delegations from about fifty countries, representing Africa, the Middle East, the Balkans, and Eastern Europe, participated in the 2025 edition of the “Key-The Energy Transition Expo,” which recorded an attendance increase of over 20%, of which +40% came from abroad.
