The installed renewable energy capacity increased by more than 5% between 2021 and 2025, thanks to legislative and regulatory reforms that allowed for the achievement of 12 gigawatts of installed energy, including more than 5.4 gigawatts from renewable sources, said Leila Benali, the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, on Tuesday in Rabat.
In response to an oral question in the House of Councillors, Ms. Benali recalled that the National Energy Strategy, launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in 2009, is based on three fundamental pillars: renewable energies, energy efficiency, and regional integration.
She added that Morocco is implementing an unprecedented investment program aimed at quadrupling annual investments in renewable energies and quintupling investments in the electrical grid, emphasizing that this dynamic has contributed to reducing electricity costs and increasing the use of clean and renewable sources.
Regarding energy efficiency, Ms. Benali highlighted that the ministry launched several programs in 2021, after a period of delay, aimed at streamlining consumption, including the widespread use of energy-saving bulbs and the revision of partnership agreements with regions, particularly the Oriental region, to rehabilitate public lighting, public buildings, and mosques.
She also noted that efforts included the agricultural and services sectors, in addition to establishing energy performance standards in public buildings.
At the institutional level, Ms. Benali indicated that the Moroccan Agency for Energy Efficiency and the Energy Engineering Company have been reformed to strengthen the agency’s mandate in energy efficiency and expand it to include other tasks related to decarbonization and the circular economy.
