Rabat – The National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) is actively continuing its campaigns to combat the illegal trade of the European goldfinch, a species threatened with extinction in Morocco, as part of its efforts to preserve biodiversity and fight against poaching.
During the awareness day organized before the official opening of the 2024-2025 hunting season, the crucial importance of combating poaching was reaffirmed, according to a statement from the Agency, noting that this national priority is part of a comprehensive strategy focused on the protection of wild species and their natural habitats.
In this regard, intensive surveillance operations have been conducted by the ANEF in coordination with the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), the Royal Gendarmerie, and the Royal Armed Forces, the same source adds, specifying that these actions have led to the seizure of a significant number of European goldfinches as well as equipment used for their illegal capture.
The Oriental region, particularly Oujda and Jerada, has been at the heart of these operations, with notable results. Significant seizures have also been made in other regions such as Rabat, Khémisset, Fès, Meknès, Souk El Arbaa, and Larache.
The European goldfinch is classified as a threatened species in Morocco. In accordance with Law No. 29.05 relating to the protection of wild flora and fauna species and the control of their trade, it is strictly prohibited to capture, possess, sell, or expose this bird for sale.
Any violation is subject to fines ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 dirhams per bird, in addition to the confiscation of the materials used, including means of transport.
Known as Stayla or Mukenine in Morocco, the European goldfinch is appreciated for its bright plumage and harmonious melodies that delight bird enthusiasts throughout the Mediterranean region. However, this popularity makes it a prime target for trafficking and smuggling networks, jeopardizing its survival.
The ANEF reiterates its firm commitment to work closely with the competent authorities to counter these illegal activities.
It also calls on citizens to mobilize and report any acts that could endanger this emblematic species.
