Morocco positions itself as an essential leader in the global energy transition, with an ambitious strategy focused on renewable energies and green hydrogen. This direction is based on its abundant natural resources, strong strategic partnerships, and a clear political will, making the Kingdom a model to follow for developing countries.

Strategic Advantages for Green Hydrogen

Morocco benefits from exceptional sunshine and regular winds, combined with a strategic geographical position between Europe and Africa, allowing it privileged access to significant energy markets. The World Energy Council has even designated it as one of the six nations best positioned to produce and export green hydrogen and its derivatives. By 2030, the Kingdom aims to capture 4% of global demand for green hydrogen.

Flagship Projects and Promising Partnerships

The OCP Group is among the major players in this transition, with the construction of a production unit for one million tons of green ammonia by 2030. Meanwhile, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) is conducting pilot projects combining various technologies such as Power-to-Hydrogen and Power-to-X, powered by renewable energies. Additionally, international partnerships, particularly with the European Union, strengthen this dynamic, positioning Morocco as a true energy bridge between Europe and Africa.

Challenges to Overcome

Despite its many advantages, Morocco faces structural challenges. The infrastructure dedicated to hydrogen export remains insufficient, and the regulatory framework needs strengthening to attract more foreign investments. Furthermore, the high cost of projects related to green hydrogen is a barrier, exacerbated by increasing international competition.

A Strategic Opportunity for Europe

In the face of the global energy crisis, Europe sees Morocco as a reliable and strategic partner. This has translated into major investments, such as a $300 million fund signed with the Netherlands to finance renewable energy and water management projects. These initiatives demonstrate the Kingdom’s commitment to establishing itself as a key player on the global energy stage.

Towards Global Leadership

Morocco has all the cards in hand to become a global leader in green hydrogen, thus contributing to the decarbonization of the global economy while strengthening its own economy. However, to achieve this goal, the Kingdom will need to overcome obstacles related to infrastructure and financing while multiplying strategic partnerships with international players.

With a clear vision and solid foundations, Morocco confirms its role as a pioneer in the energy transition, paving the way for a more sustainable future for the entire continent and beyond.
