The Moroccan Sahara is positioned as a strategic region for investments in renewable energies, attracting national and international players committed to the energy transition. Large-scale projects such as the Tarfaya wind farm and the solar sites planned in Laâyoune and Boujdour illustrate Morocco’s ambition to strengthen its energy production capacity while meeting European decarbonization requirements.
A strengthened partnership with Europe
The recent visit of Emmanuel Macron to Morocco marked a key step in energy cooperation between Morocco and Europe. Through the French Development Agency (AFD), France has committed over 900 million euros to sustainable development projects in the Sahara over five years. These initiatives aim to meet Morocco’s energy needs and provide clean energy to Europe, thereby reinforcing Morocco’s role as a strategic supplier in the European energy transition.
Flagship projects for sustainable transformation
The territory also attracts large multinationals, particularly in the field of green hydrogen. In Guelmim-Oued Noun, the Chbika project, led by TotalEnergies, plans to harness 1 GW of solar and wind energy to produce 200,000 tons of green ammonia per year from the electrolysis of desalinated water. This investment, with a total estimated amount of 11 billion dollars, consolidates Morocco’s position as a leader in the production of green fuels.
For its part, OCP plans large-scale infrastructure in Laâyoune, with an expected production of 3.2 million tons of green ammonia per year by 2032. This project includes desalination facilities, hydrogen electrolyzers, as well as solar and wind power plants.
Dakhla, a model for sustainable water management
In addition to its energy potential, Dakhla focuses on seawater desalination. The construction by Veolia of the second largest desalination plant in the world, with a capacity of 300 million cubic meters per year, is a cornerstone of this strategy. Powered by clean energy, this infrastructure aims to meet domestic and agricultural needs while minimizing its environmental impact.
A promising future for the Moroccan Sahara
Thanks to these ambitious projects, the Moroccan Sahara is establishing itself as an essential player in the global energy transition. By leveraging its unique potential and strengthening international partnerships, the region contributes to sustainable economic and environmental development while addressing global energy challenges.
