EDF plans to launch, starting November 2025, an experimental scheme allowing 6,000 customers to be compensated for reducing their electricity consumption during peak demand periods. The objective is to assess individuals’ willingness to adopt electrical flexibility and relieve the grid during consumption spikes.
This type of program, known as “demand response,” involves reducing or shifting certain electrical uses, such as heating, washing machines, or electric vehicle charging, during peak hours. This helps limit the reliance on expensive and polluting thermal power plants and decreases the country’s energy dependence.
Unlike other programs like EJP or Tempo, which are viewed as restrictive, this system is incentive-based: participants receive rewards for their involvement. Hello Watt, a platform specializing in energy management, has been organizing consumption challenges since 2024, with rewards ranging from €2 to €1,000 directly credited through its app. During the winter of 2024/25, over 50,000 participants helped save 91 MWh, equivalent to 286 tons of CO₂.
The process is straightforward: users download the Hello Watt app, receive a notification before a peak demand period, and adjust their consumption. By taking on the challenge, they enter a lottery for a chance to win up to €100.
Hello Watt, which has more than a million downloads and a team of 200 people, also aids individuals in selecting greener suppliers, insulating their homes, and installing heat pumps and solar panels. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to an accessible, intelligent energy transition that benefits consumers’ wallets.
