Morocco has sufficient solar and wind potential to cover up to half of the electricity consumption of the European Union on its own. This was stated by Ryad Mezzour, the Minister of Industry and Trade, in an interview with the Italian daily La Verità.
According to him, the Kingdom is capable of mobilizing 1,600 to 1,700 TWh, which is 50% of the 3,000 TWh consumed annually in Europe, thanks to its solar and wind energy resources, both land-based and offshore. This strategic advantage positions the country at the heart of the European energy transition.
This ambition is part of the “Moroccan Offer” on green hydrogen, which has attracted significant international interest. The minister noted that 40 investment proposals have already been submitted by global players looking to secure the best sunny and windy sites in the Kingdom.
Ryad Mezzour also emphasized that renewable energies provide a solution to water challenges. Morocco plans, by 2028-2030, to ensure 100% of potable water and 80% of agricultural water through an integrated system of storage, inter-basin transfer, desalination, and reuse, independent of precipitation.
On the industrial front, the minister recalled that Morocco, lacking oil and gas, benefits from a unique advantage: renewable energy being more competitive than fossil fuels. The aim is therefore to quickly shift to 100% green production to enhance the attractiveness of the “Made in Morocco” label.
Finally, he stressed the key role of logistics, which accounts for up to 25% of production costs. To support its competitiveness, Morocco is focusing on developing an “ultra-competitive” network of internal and international connections, a crucial condition for accessing new global markets.
