Casablanca, Rabat, and Tangier are testing new smart waste collection models. The goal is to enhance recycling culture and reduce pressure on landfills.

Morocco produces nearly 7 million tons of household waste each year. Once marginal, source separation is gradually taking hold. In Casablanca, new pilot neighborhoods feature differentiated bins and connected systems that measure fill levels. Municipal applications allow residents to report collection points and encourage civic participation.

Several local recycling companies, supported by green startups, are now processing plastics, paper, and organic waste. Some hotel chains and fast-food restaurants are partnering with sorting programs to minimize their environmental footprint.

These local initiatives are part of the National Sustainable Development Strategy 2030, which aims for 30% waste recycling in the medium term. While logistics and awareness remain significant challenges, momentum is building: the ecological transition is now driven by simple actions that are accessible to every citizen.
