Dakhla is set to become a pillar of Morocco’s digital and energy sovereignty with an ambitious project: the construction of a 500-megawatt hyperscale data center, powered exclusively by locally produced renewable energy. This next-generation data center is part of a national dynamic of convergence between digital transition and energy transition.

Driven by a partnership between the Ministry of Energy Transition, led by Leila Benali, and the Ministry of Digital Transition, under the leadership of Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, the project was officially announced on the sidelines of the National AI Summit. The goal is to build a sustainable digital infrastructure that is energy-efficient and resilient to climate change.

Fully funded by the two ministries, the future center will rely on an integrated strategy aimed at optimizing synergies between green energy production, technological innovation, and digital infrastructures. A ministerial steering committee and a technical evaluation committee will ensure its effective implementation, providing transparent and rigorous oversight.

The project is not limited to data hosting. It also aims to promote the digitization of energy systems, from transport to distribution, including storage, with a view to increased intelligence and efficiency.

With its 500 MW of power, the Dakhla data center represents a major step towards Morocco’s digital and energy sovereignty. It will become one of the largest data centers on the continent, while remaining aligned with international environmental standards.

This choice of Dakhla is not coincidental. The region has an exceptional potential for renewable energy, making it an ideal ground for a project that is both strategic and sustainable, with significant economic and social benefits, particularly in terms of skilled employment and technological attractiveness.
