On the sidelines of COP29, Morocco and the International Energy Agency (IEA) signed an ambitious action program covering the period 2024-2026 on Friday in Baku. This partnership aims to strengthen bilateral collaboration around the energy transition, confirming the Kingdom’s role as a regional leader in renewable energy.
A program for multiple objectives
The program was signed during a bilateral meeting at the Morocco Pavilion between Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, and Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA. This new agreement covers several areas, including:
- Statistics and energy data management.
- Regulation of electricity and gas markets.
- Support for renewable energies and hydrogen.
- Regional energy transitions and integration of carbon markets.
- Climate resilience and dialogue on energy security.
This program is part of the continuity of cooperation initiated in 2007 and aims to support the implementation of Morocco’s national energy strategy through technical assistance and exchanges on global best practices.
An ambitious energy policy
Morocco, a pioneer in the development of clean energies, continues its transition towards a low-carbon economy. The Kingdom aims to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels while increasing the share of renewable energies in its energy mix.
According to the Ministry of Energy Transition, this renewed partnership illustrates Morocco’s commitment to promoting sustainable energy policies and strengthening its international cooperation in the face of climate challenges.
A model for the region
Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA, praised Morocco’s efforts in the field of renewable energies. Describing Morocco as a “source of inspiration” for North Africa and beyond, he stated: “I am very pleased that Morocco is part of the IEA family. This action program will strengthen our cooperation in several crucial energy areas.”
A member of the IEA since 2016, Morocco enjoys international recognition for its commitment to combating climate change and its ambitious energy transition.
COP29 and climate financing
COP29, which takes place from November 11 to 22, focuses on climate financing, essential for enabling all countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and protect vulnerable communities from the growing effects of climate change.
Through this partnership with the IEA, Morocco consolidates its position as a leader in energy transition while paving the way for sustainable and inclusive solutions to address global environmental challenges.
