Acciona has obtained two loans totaling 62 million euros from CaixaBank and COFIDES for the construction of the seawater desalination plant in Casablanca. This financing adds to the 250 million euros already granted by the Spanish government in January 2024. The plant, developed by a consortium including Acciona, Green of Africa, and Afriquia Gaz, represents a total investment of 6.5 billion dirhams. It is expected to be operational by the end of 2026, with an initial treatment capacity of 548,000 m3 of water per day, expandable to 822,000 m3 by 2028.
The project aims to address water scarcity and mitigate the effects of climate change in the Casablanca region and its surroundings, including the cities of Settat, Berrechid, and Bir Jdid. In addition to its environmental importance, this strategic project is expected to strengthen economic ties between Morocco and Spain while providing significant investment opportunities.
