Morocco is nearing the realization of its first offshore wind farm, an initiative led by the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen). According to an article in the newspaper *L’Economiste* published on September 11, 2024, Masen is about to finalize the crucial step preceding the construction of this park, which will be located in the Essaouira-Agadir region. The agency is preparing to launch a call for tenders to recruit a consultant tasked with conducting the feasibility study.

**Feasibility Study and Technical Assistance**

The DNV consulting firm had, two years ago, identified three areas suitable for the installation of offshore wind turbines along the Moroccan coastline, with the central region being chosen as the most promising. A consultant will be selected to assess the technical and economic aspects of the project, in addition to conducting environmental, social, and economic impact studies. This consultant will also advise Masen on the type of wind turbines to install: floating turbines or fixed foundation turbines, with the latter being better suited to Moroccan coastal conditions.

**A Strong Wind Potential for Morocco**

The prefeasibility study showed that the Essaouira-Agadir region is ideal for this type of infrastructure due to regular winds exceeding nine meters per second and deep waters reaching 1,000 meters. This area could produce up to 2 GW of electricity, or even more if conditions allow. Indeed, stable wind resources could significantly contribute to Morocco’s energy mix while allowing the country to establish itself as an exporter of electrical energy.

The project also benefits from significant financial support from the European Investment Bank (EIB), which has granted Masen a €2 million grant for the technical assistance necessary to complete this final step before construction.
