The project of the Atlantic African Pipeline, jointly championed by Morocco and Nigeria, exemplifies the Royal Vision for a more integrated and economically strong Africa. This was stated by Amina Benkhadra, Director General of ONHYM, during the 10th Geopolitical Meetings of Trouville in France, where Morocco was the guest of honor.
According to her, this initiative aligns with the logic of win-win development projects promoted by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, fostering both bilateral and multilateral African cooperation, and addressing the continent’s growing needs.
This pipeline, which will traverse 13 African countries housing nearly 400 million inhabitants, will not only cover a significant portion of their energy and electricity needs but also stimulate growth in key industrial sectors, notably mining industries.
Ms. Benkhadra noted that this project will also have a strategic impact for Europe, contributing to the security and diversification of its energy supply, thereby strengthening Africa’s role as a crucial player in the global energy transition.
Regarding the progress of the project, she emphasized that notable advancements have been made, particularly in relation to engineering and environmental impact studies. The next stages are expected to accelerate with the creation of the project company, anticipated after the signing of the bilateral treaty.
The roundtable, featuring participation from Tarik Hammane, CEO of ONEE, highlighted the economic and energy stakes of this large-scale infrastructure.
Ms. Benkhadra concluded by reaffirming Morocco’s strategic role, thanks to its geostrategic position and structuring projects (pipeline, green hydrogen, interconnections), as an energy corridor and a bridge between Africa and Europe.
