The national production of electrical energy recorded an increase of 2.4% by the end of September 2024, according to the Directorate of Studies and Financial Forecasts (DEPF). This performance marks an acceleration compared to the 1% increase observed during the same period in 2023.

A marked support for renewable energies

This growth is mainly attributed to the rise in production from renewable energies under law 13-09, which surged by 35.8%, compared to an 8% increase the previous year, according to the DEPF.

In contrast, private electricity production and that of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) showed little variation, with respective changes of +0.1% and -0.3%, after rates of +4.3% and -9.9% in 2023.

Increase in imports and decline in exports

In a context of a 3.6% increase in net energy demand by the end of September 2024, electricity imports experienced a notable increase of 30.7%, after a 28.6% increase during the same period in 2023.

At the same time, electricity exports continued to decline, recording a decrease of 27.2%, after a 26.5% decrease a year earlier.

    Stagnation of electricity consumption

The national consumption of electrical energy showed almost stagnation at -0.3% by the end of September 2024, contrasting with a 3.6% increase during the same period in 2023.

This trend reflects a 4.2% decrease in sales of very high, high, and medium voltage electricity (excluding distributors), partially offset by a 2.8% increase in sales to distributors. As for the energy consumed by households, it remained almost stable, with a slight decrease of -0.2%.

This dynamic highlights the growing importance of renewable energies in the national energy mix, while underscoring the challenges related to balancing production, importation, and electricity consumption in Morocco.
