The Kingdom has obtained, for the first time, the highest level of assurance from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding nuclear safeguards, announced on Tuesday by the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR).

“For the first time, the IAEA publishes in its annual report on the implementation of nuclear safeguards for the year 2024 that the Kingdom of Morocco benefits from the expanded conclusion certifying that all nuclear materials present on national territory are exclusively used for peaceful purposes,” states AMSSNuR in a press release.

This certification reflects the robustness of the Kingdom’s regulatory infrastructure, its unwavering commitment to nuclear transparency, and strict compliance with international obligations regarding the non-proliferation of nuclear materials, emphasizes the same source.

Regarding the highest level of assurance granted by the IAEA, this conclusion is the result of several years of verification activities carried out under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and its Additional Protocol, ratified by Morocco in 1975 and 2011, respectively.

These verification activities concern both the information provided about nuclear facilities, locations outside facilities, their operations, as well as nuclear materials and technologies.

It is noted that this result reflects the significant efforts made by AMSSNuR and other concerned national parties to ensure the implementation of the commitments made by the Kingdom under the non-proliferation treaty and the agreements concluded with the IAEA.
