The United Nations General Assembly adopted by consensus a biennial resolution presented by Morocco, titled “Promotion of sustainable tourism, including ecotourism, for poverty eradication and environmental protection”. Co-sponsored by 109 member states from various regional groups, this resolution marks 14 years of Moroccan commitment to resilient and environmentally friendly tourism.

A consensus on the role of tourism in sustainable development

Despite an international context marked by divergences, the Moroccan delegation managed to gain broad support for this initiative. The resolution highlights the essential role of sustainable tourism in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in terms of resilience to climate and natural crises, while emphasizing the importance of social protection for workers in the tourism sector.

Recognized Moroccan leadership on the international stage

The adoption of this resolution consolidates Morocco’s position as a leader in the field of sustainable tourism within multilateral institutions. This success also reflects the royal vision aimed at transforming Moroccan tourism by 2026, positioning the Kingdom among the top 15 global destinations, while increasing its contribution to the national economy and creating 200,000 additional jobs.

    International collaboration and concrete actions

During the presentation of this resolution, Morocco reaffirmed its willingness to closely collaborate with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and other UN agencies to strengthen ecotourism and promote appropriate policies. These efforts aim to encourage investments in a social and sustainable economy, aligning national priorities with the principles of responsible tourism.

    A call for coordinated action

The resolution urges countries and stakeholders in the sector to develop appropriate policies and guidelines to support sustainable tourism. This model is based on the three pillars of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental. It also encourages increased mobilization to invest in the social and civic economy, in order to promote a tourism model that respects local communities and the environment.

Through this initiative, Morocco once again confirms its commitment to sustainable development while reinforcing its role as a key player on the international stage in the field of tourism.
