TotalEnergies has just signed a land reservation contract with Morocco to initiate a green hydrogen production project, aiming to transform the Guelmim-Oued Noun region in southern Morocco into a large-scale production center. This agreement, announced during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Morocco, will allow TotalEnergies to begin pre-project studies.
**An ambitious project for a green hydrogen hub**
Named “Chbika,” this project aims to construct 1 GW of capacity in solar and wind energy. These energy sources will power a desalinated seawater electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen, which will then be converted into 200,000 tons of green ammonia per year, primarily intended for the European market. This project is the first step of a large-scale program that is expected to make this Moroccan region a global center for green hydrogen.
**An international collaboration for sustainable production**
For this large-scale project, TotalEnergies has partnered with several companies, including TE H2 – co-founded with the EREN group, which specializes in renewable energies, and international partners such as the Danish shipping company A.P. Møller and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), which specializes in wind energy. Together, TE H2 and CIP will be responsible for developing renewable energy production facilities, while A.P. Møller Capital will handle the development of the port infrastructure necessary for export.
**A strategy focused on Europe**
Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergies, emphasizes that this agreement is perfectly aligned with the group’s strategy: to establish itself in regions with high potential for renewable energies, such as Morocco, to produce green hydrogen that can be exported to Europe. This project illustrates the group’s commitment to strengthening its capabilities in the field of energy transition and playing a key role in supplying Europe with sustainable energy.
