The global artistic project The HERDS made a significant stop in Morocco to raise awareness about the climate emergency. Life-sized puppets representing fleeing animals — lions, gorillas, giraffes, cheetahs, and wildebeests — parade through the streets of Marrakech, Casablanca, and Salé, drawing attention to the ecological crisis affecting the planet.
This project, led by The Walk Productions, a British organization, and designed by Palestinian playwright Amir Nizar Zuabi, features puppets made from recycled materials to symbolize the flight of animals in the face of the destruction of their ecosystems. A strong visual message that highlights the impact of climate disruptions, without borders.
The HERDS will travel over 20,000 kilometers and 15 countries in 2025, with a Moroccan stop planned from March to May. On this occasion, more than 150 participants took part in puppet-making workshops and artistic training. Six public performances are scheduled in Marrakech, Casablanca, and Salé between May 2 and May 11.
The event is supported by several national partners, including the High Atlas Foundation, Théâtre Nomade, and ESAV Marrakech, among others. By creating nearly 100 life-sized puppets from recycled materials, the initiative aims to raise public awareness of environmental issues through art. Participatory workshops and intensive training will also be led by the South African collective Ukwanda Puppets & Designs Art, with sessions planned at ESAV Marrakech and Théâtre Nomade de Casablanca.
The passage of The HERDS in Morocco is a unique opportunity to promote energy transition and environmental protection while celebrating artistic expression. This stop, linked to the Kingdom’s commitment to the environment, marks a significant moment in the collective awareness of current ecological challenges.
Public performances will take place on the following dates and locations:
- Marrakech: May 3 (Place Jemaa El Fna) and May 4 (Jardins de la Menara)
- Casablanca: May 9 and 10 (City Center and Ain Sebaa)
- Salé: May 11 (Old Medina of Salé)
These poetic parades will blend striking visuals, choreography, and sounds, creating an immersive experience to raise public awareness of environmental issues in a playful and emotional way.
