In Salé, a vast vacant lot located in the Al Frouki neighborhood of Tabriquet has gradually turned into an open-air landfill, sparking outrage among residents and reigniting concerns over the decline in living conditions and health risks.
According to the newspaper Al Akhbar, this site, situated in close proximity to the Mohammed VI Mosque and surrounded by densely populated residential complexes, has become a dumping ground for household and solid waste. In the absence of regular monitoring and sustainable intervention from the relevant authorities, waste continues to accumulate, exacerbating the environmental degradation of this urban area.
### Health Risks and Daily Disturbances
Local residents have condemned the situation as unbearable. The permanent presence of waste leads to strong unpleasant odors, promotes the proliferation of insects and rodents, and attracts stray dogs, posing a direct threat to public health, particularly for children and the elderly. Additionally, there is a clear affront to urban aesthetics in a neighborhood that residents already consider marginalized in terms of local services.
Several residents claim to have repeatedly reported the issue to the Salé municipality and cleanliness services, urging that this area be incorporated into a regular cleaning and treatment program for unsightly spots, similar to other neighborhoods in the city. However, the interventions observed remain sporadic and insufficient, lacking a structural response to the problem, according to their accounts.
### Call for Sustainable Solutions
In light of the persistence of this situation, local and associative actors are advocating for a comprehensive rehabilitation of the site. Proposed solutions include fencing the lot to prevent its chaotic use or transforming it into a green space or collective facility, which could sustainably improve residents’ quality of life.
These stakeholders believe that the management of cleanliness and the preservation of the urban environment is a shared responsibility that requires greater involvement from local authorities and the delegated waste management company responsible for waste collection.
While awaiting concrete action, images taken on-site illustrate the extent of environmental degradation and reinforce the sense of abandonment felt by residents, who are calling for urgent and lasting measures to end what they consider a permanent source of pollution and disturbances in the heart of their neighborhood.
