Over the next five years, the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) plans to invest more than 27 billion dirhams to strengthen and modernize Morocco’s electrical network. This announcement was made by ONEE’s General Director, Tarik Hamane, during the International Energy Forum organized by Industrie du Maroc Magazine in Casablanca.
An optimized network for renewable energies
This investment primarily aims to maximize the integration of renewable energies, particularly wind and solar, with a special focus on the southern and southeastern provinces. The objective is to ensure more competitive energy, reduce costs, and support the decarbonization of the Moroccan economy, thereby making the country more attractive for energy-intensive industries, such as battery manufacturing and Giga Factories.
Thanks to an energy strategy committed since 2009, Morocco is already a model in terms of energy transition. Currently, the country has an installed capacity of 44.3% in renewable energies, which amounts to approximately 5,400 MW distributed among wind (2,400 MW), hydro (2,100 MW), and solar (900 MW). Ongoing projects are expected to quickly exceed the 52% target set by the national strategy.
A major issue for energy security
During his speech, Mr. Hamane emphasized the importance of developing an electrical network capable of managing the intermittency of renewable energies. At the same time, strategic projects, such as the Morocco-Nigeria Gas Pipeline, will contribute to strengthening the country’s energy security and its integration with West African markets.
A forum to discuss energy challenges and opportunities
The International Energy Forum brought together more than 600 experts and decision-makers to discuss issues related to renewable energies, green hydrogen, and natural gas. In this context, Hicham Rahioui Idrissi, CEO of Industrie du Maroc, highlighted the importance of energy transition for the competitiveness of Moroccan companies.
Discussions focused on key themes such as energy resilience, industrial energy efficiency, the role of green hydrogen in the energy transition, and opportunities for strategic partnerships. This meeting is part of the continuity of His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision, which makes energy development an essential lever for modernization and industrial sovereignty of the Kingdom.
